At the End of the Shift

The request arrived in the last stretch of the afternoon, when the office had begun to acquire its leaving-time restlessness. Chairs rolled back from desks. Someone near the kitchen laughed at something on a phone. Adam had already closed the disputed renewal ticket’s working notes and was rubbing the heel of his hand against one tired eye when his supervisor stopped beside him.

Thirty minutes, they said. Just enough to turn today’s clarified process into a short checklist for the team.

Adam looked at the blank document on the screen, then at the time in the corner. The request was reasonable. That was what made it difficult. It wasn’t an emergency, and nobody had said whether the time was paid or formally required, but refusing still felt like creating a problem where there hadn’t been one.

He kept his voice even.

“I can’t stay on tonight. I’ve got to head off at the end of my shift.”

His supervisor’s expression tightened for half a second before settling back into something neutral. “Right. Okay. I thought you might be able to get a first draft down.”

“I understand. I can send over the points I made in the review tomorrow, if that helps. But I can’t do the extra half-hour now.”

There was a pause—not hostile, but no longer effortless.

“Fine,” the supervisor said. “We’ll pick it up another time.”

Adam nodded. “Thanks.”

He shut down his computer, checked that the renewal notes were saved, and put on his charcoal hoodie. The checklist remained unwritten. So did the neat version of the process that might have made him look especially useful to the team. But the boundary was clear, and for once he had not waited until exhaustion made the decision for him.

Outside, Manchester was damp and grey-blue at the edges of evening. Adam walked toward the tram stop with his shoulders slightly hunched, not exactly relieved, but less burdened than he might have been. Behind him, the office still had work to finish. It simply wasn’t all his work tonight.
