One Drink, Then Home

Adam nearly keeps walking when the message comes through. He is tired enough that home feels like the sensible answer, but the invitation is casual—no pressure, just an hour nearby with two colleagues from the quality review.

He changes direction.

The pub is warmer than the pavement outside, its windows fogged at the edges. Priya and Callum have taken a table near the back, still in work clothes, their phones face-down beside their glasses. Adam orders a lager and checks the price before tapping his card. Eighteen pounds, once food and the drink are accounted for. Not disastrous. Not nothing.

For the first few minutes, they talk around work rather than about it: a broken printer, the train delays, someone’s neighbour learning the drums. Adam listens more than he speaks. Then Callum brings up the renewal case, not as a complaint but as something that had made the afternoon harder than it needed to be.

Adam explains what he had found and what he had not. He keeps his account plain, careful not to make the missing records sound like anyone’s fault. Priya says that was probably why the supervisor had asked him to speak in the review. People trusted notes that did not pretend to know more than they did.

The compliment catches him off guard. He makes a small joke about having a talent for making uncertainty sound organised, and they laugh—not loudly, but easily. For once, the conversation does not feel like another test of whether he has performed correctly.

After an hour, Adam notices his shoulders have started to ache. He finishes his drink rather than ordering another. Outside, the air is cool and damp, and his tiredness has returned, but it no longer feels quite as solitary.

He says goodbye at the corner and walks home with less money in his account and a little more sense that work might contain actual people, not just tickets and expectations.
